Sandra and I talk about Felix Scheinberger’s books Dare to Sketch and Urban Watercolor Sketching. We both love the loose and quirky nature of his work. These art books are definitely eye candy!

Urban Watercolor Sketching by Felix Scheinberger is not your typical traditional watercolour book. His watercolours are lively. Sometimes he simply uses dabs of colours here and there to accentuate a drawing. Other images use a combination of layered washes and wet in wet. His lines are lovely and wobbly (in a good way) too.

Dare to Sketch also shares that same characteristically quirky linework.

Although both of these books have some interesting tips to offer they are also a feast for the eyes. If you want to loosen up in the way you work and get away from traditional sketching they are well worth checking out.

Tara has been looking through a book on Urban Watercolour Sketching by Felix Scheinberger and is inspired by his urban watercolour sketches. She decides that she is going to have a go. Accompanied by her partner they go out to a busy local pub/cafe and Kevin reads the paper while Tara draws.

Tara decides that she will attempt to draw very loosely and in a wobbly style inspired by Felix Scheinberger. She realises that she needs a lot more practice and is disappointed by the result, but it was fun to try.

When we draw, we sometimes expect to be immediately good at creating something, even if it is very different from what we normally draw. It’s only through being prepared to fail that we can eventually get better.

Sandra has set herself a goal this year to draw every day as part of our Kick365 Art Challenge. To do this she has been getting up an hour earlier each day to make time to draw. She has decided that she will add some colour to her sketchbook with some of the drawings too as often she sticks to black and white with her sketches.

Sandra finds if she gets up an hour earlier, no one else needs anything doing and there are no phone calls to interrupt while she sketches. The downside is that mornings are very dark in England in the Winter. In January, it doesn’t start getting light until 8 am, so walking the dog early is pretty spooky in the woods near her house.

Tara has been having a creative slump / block since Christmas. She just hasn’t felt like drawing or painting even though she got loads of new art materials for Christmas. One suggestion is to create a page of drawings without worrying about the outcome, do not be precious at all.

You could so this like Tara by setting a timer and only allowing 5 minutes per drawing, or you could use your non dominant hand or do some blind contour drawing.

Sandra demonstrates how to draw hands using continuous line drawing. A continuous line drawing forces you to look for shapes and consider where to place your next line. Drawing hands is great practice as you can form your hands into so many different positions.

Today we talk about using non-traditional drawing tools for making interesting marks in your art. Tara shows a couple of the things she has found around the house to draw with and Sandra visits the woods near her home to see what potential drawing tools she can find.

Some of the unusual drawing tools she finds to experiment with are – a feather, a twig, a bit of fern and a pine cone. Each of these items makes interesting marks for a drawing.

In this video, Sandra talks about her new Sailor Fountain Pen and the Differences between the Sailor Fountain Pen and Lamy Safari Fountain Pen for drawing.

The Sailor fountain pen has a very different nib to the Lamy Safari. Although Sandra still loves her Lamy Safari Fountain Pen she does like the effects you can get with the Sailor Fountain Pen nib. Because the Sailor Fountain Pen nib is at an angle it lets you make a variety of line widths from very thick to very thin which is ideal for drawing and sketching.

Sandra also makes suggestions for the type of ink that she is using that doesn’t clog either of the Fountain Pens. Tara has previously had problems with her Sailor Fountain Pen clogging, but didn’t use the Noodlers Ink that Sandra now recommends.
