Most of Ian’s work involves painting buildings which he paints in a lively vibrant way. When we previously interviewed Ian we were speaking to him after the show and he mentioned his interest in art and mental health. With everything that is going on at the moment with the Corona Virus lockdown, we thought this was the perfect time to get him back to share his knowledge.
The Five Strands of Mental Health
In this podcast, Ian talks about the five strands to mental health and how they relate to art:
- Being active
- Connecting
- Giving back
- Taking notice
- Learning
At the moment, as we record the podcast most of the country is in lockdown for the Corona Virus Pandemic so it’s difficult to go outside and urban sketch. However, Ian also has alternative suggestions to how you can still use art to help your mental health. He has adapted from painting buildings and streets all over the world to concentrate on painting interiors of his house and garden.

Wow Ian! I absolutely enjoy your work and trying to recreate it and it is quite a challenge for me! You are so fantastic!
I hadn’t painted in over 40 years since high school and took a cruise and there was a watercolor teacher on board and I fell in love all over again with painting! I would love to chat with you sometime! Do you have online classes?
I envy those people living in the UK that can paint on site with you! What a dream that would be!
I’m so glad our art teacher on board loves your work and challenged us to watch your videos and paint some of your pieces! I get hard on myself and want to be good at this NOW! I’m encouraged to take baby steps and I need more patience! This is so therapeutic to paint and really helps my stress level. I haven’t seen my children in 7 months and cant wait until I feel It’s safe to fly again to get back home! I’m so thankful for artists like you that share their work and encourage others as it truly is helping me cope with this covid monster we are all facing! Thank you so much! I hope to take a course of yours in the near future! Take care and stay safe! Thank your wife for her patience in sharing you with the world and making it a better place! Thanks TONS!
