It’s day 24 of the Find Your Art Style Experiment and today I decided I would try colouring up some of my sketchbook characters using Posca Pens.

Try Colouring Up A Sketch

Posca Markers and Mixed Media Paper

I did actually have a bit of an epiphany at the weekend about my work, but I will talk about that later this week. So back to the Posca’s I decided to use some smooth Canson Imagine mixed media paper to draw on.

Tracing Over The Sketch

I scanned in my sketchbook and printed the image out onto computer paper. This meant that I could then trace off the drawing using my LED lightbox. I have to admit I much prefer just drawing something to tracing off a drawing I have already done. However, this meant I could experiment and keep my original sketch.

After tracing the drawing I shook the Posca markers and got them started on a spare sheet of paper before applying them. I found them incredibly streaky to use and they seemed to leave blobs of marker bits. Maybe it’s the paper I was using. I do have some proper bleedproof marker paper, but I don’t like it as it’s really thin.

I coloured the rest of the drawing with markers, we’ll pretend you didn’t see me smudge a bit and then make it into eyelashes. I then added a black line with a Unipin pen, but by this time I had already decided I didn’t like it.

coloured pencils

To add some shading I tried using some water-soluble coloured pencil. I have to say that I really didn’t like using the Posca markers. I much prefer the Ohuhu alcohol markers I have.

We Need Art Material Swap Meetups

Wouldn’t it be great if there were art material swap meetups? You could take all the materials you don’t like and swap them for stuff you do with other artists.
