It’s day 34 of the Find Your Art Style Experiment. Today I’ve gone back to my Neocolor ii pastels to create an abstract face. I wanted to try creating something similar to the face I created on day 21 when I used Gouache but with Neocolor instead.

Testing out Pencils to Draw over Neocolor

I’ve always read that Neocolors are difficult to draw or write over and will ruin fineliner pens and markers. So on a scrap of paper I tried drawing over them with an Inktense pencil and a Stabillo All Aquarelle Pencil and both seemed to work.

Applying Neocolors

I created a rough outline in pencil and then used the Neocolors. I thought the man in the reference photo looked like he might be obsessed with his appearance so decided I would add clothing shelves a small mirror and coat hangers.

Applying Water to the Background

I smoothed the background out with water and then went over the background with Neocolor, so it wasn’t as strong. I must admit I never quite know what to do with backgrounds.

Once I was happy with the colour I went in with the pencil to create the linework. I found that the Stabillo All worked much better than the Inktense pencil, especially when I dipped it in water.

I quite like the finished face, though I wish I had tapered it more towards the chin, but I am not keen on the background so i need to think about that for future work.
