It’s day 40 of the Find Your Art Style Experiment. At the weekend I spotted some pastel paper in my cupboard that I must have bought years ago, the paper was in nice bright colours. i decided I would have a go at drawing on a blue sheet which I thought would make a good background colour.

Drawing a Face Outline with a White Coloured Pencil

I cut it into a square and taped it down on a board. Then I started drawing a rough face outline with a white coloured pencil.

Colouring the Face with Neocolor

colouring with Neocolor 2

Once that was complete I started adding the Neocolor 2 pastels, starting with the lighter colours and then adding darks.I also added a few colour marks in the background blue to add a bit of interest.

Testing Water on the Pastel Paper

testing water on the paper

This paper is not meant for wet media so I tested a scrap bit of paper first to test if it would take it. I decided to risk it but use the water sparingly. I then added a bit more Neocolor to intensify some areas.

Adding the Black Lines with Stabilo All Surfaces Black pencil

adding lines with stabilo all black pencil

Once I was happy with the colour I used the Stabilo All Surface pencil to draw black lines on the face.

I quite like the effect on the pastel paper but I think I perhaps prefer the ink background from yesterday, as that paper has a lot less tooth. I do wonder if I should have drawn on the reverse side of the paper which is much smoother.

Decisions decisions. I’d love to know what you think.

I will see you tomorrow.
