It’s day 41 of the Find Your Art Style Experiment. Today I decided to try my Inktense blocks again.

Inktense blocks

I had been using them on a very smooth paper called Canson Imagine, but decided to try them on Daler Rowney Mixed Media paper which has a slight texture, just to see how it worked.

Drawing the Outline and the Applying Colour with Derwent Inktense Blocks

starting the Inktense blocks drawing

I drew out the image with a mechanical pencil abstracting the face and moving features, using a reference image as a starting point. Then I started applying the Inktense blocks.

I still haven’t quite got the hang of how much colour to lay down. I think I am so used to using the Neocolor now that I go in too heavy with the Inktense blocks.

Adding Water to the Inktense Blocks

I added some water, which makes the paint turn bright. I then went in and added more colour, but I overdid it.

To pull back some whites I used a white Neocolor crayon.

Drawing a Character Around the Eye

drawing the character

I debated abandoning this face and I probably would have done if I wasn’t making a video, but I carried on. I decided that she looked like she could be daydreaming so created a little character around her eye that is daydreaming about holidays.

I am not keen on this at all, why is it that sometimes your drawings get worse rather than better. Maybe it’s trying too hard, or trying to recreate something that you’ve done that you like or maybe it’s just an off day or week.

Anyway, that’s me now in a bad mood, I’ll see you tomorrow hopefully in less of a grump.
