It’s Day Five of the Find Your Art Style Experiment and I’m looking at my Pinterest board and I really like the softness in Mindy Lacefield and Richard Hickam‘s work. I imagine they both use acrylic or oil paint which I am not really a fan oF. So decide to try using Neocolor ii pastels to get a soft blended feel.
I found a reference image to use as a starting point, I’m not sure I like the idea of being too cutesy like Mindy Lacefield. I like her work, but I am not sure I am a cutesy person, so I try a cartoonified woman’s face. In the early stages, I thought this was going to be a complete disaster, but it came back a bit and I think it’s ok.
To get away from any potential of being too cutesy I picked a man’s face for the next staring image. After I had laid down the pastel it didn’t look that soft so I decided to add water.
I used water and a brush on the woman first and I think it helped soften it and bring it together.I then applied water to the man’s image to soften that as well. I don’t think I managed the softness I wanted but I like the unexpectedness of working straight with pastels without knowing exactly how I’m going to draw and with no prior drawing.
Time for some lunch now I reckon, I know I should make a salad but I think its a toss-up between soup and toast and marmite. What do you suggest? See you tomorrow!
