Sketchbook Face Doodle
I had drawn this little face doodle with animals around it and then I listened to The Creative Pep Talk podcast where they were talking about Venn diagrams. They’re those circle diagrams where you find bits that overlap.
Anyway, I must have been thinking about it in the night as I woke up thinking that maybe there was a way to combine the face style that I like with my characters in one image. So I decided to test the theory.
I found a reference image I liked and started by doing some thumbnail drawings. This was to work out how a face and characters could interact. I thought it might be fun if the little characters were helping him with his cool hair do. I like the square format so decided this was the format I would use and crop my painting down later.
I used gouache paints again for the face, but I really wasn’t sure how I was going to treat the characters. In the end, I decided to keep them as mainly line work using a pen, but I did overdo them a bit.
There is definitely something i like about this. The things I am not quite sure of are the treatment I gave to the characters, the plain background and the gouache. Perhaps something similar might work, but done with Neocolor pastels? What do you think?
